Site Review : Urbanity Studios

Established in 2006 when the founder and designer Meghann Kopecky took her part time venture to market.  Urbanity provide stationery, invitations and  announcements with a focus on elegant and fun invitations, including their most popular product “message in a bottle” range.  Urbanity studios has been reviewed and recommended by leading editors including Oprah, Modern Bride, Bridalwave.com.

This site is perfect for you if you want fun, playful wedding invitations that are unique and highly customizable at an inexpensive price.  If you want printable stationery then this is the site for you too.

This site is not for you if you don’t like flat printing are after a specific flower, motif or cultural attribute or want a traditional and formal wedding invitation.

Site
Layout
This site caters for invitations, stationery and announcements that are elegant and fun.  Dedicated section for weddings, alongside personal, baby and holiday.  Special focus is on their printable and ‘message in a bottle’ invitations / stationery.

Navigation is fairly basic with top navigation (no sub menus) and left hand side navigation (with sub menus) providing the main way to get around the site.  There is a site search which is pretty effective, but no other filters or option to narrow your search.

There is a good FAQ section, links to their blog and other useful information, including how to print with their templates / printable invites.

Design All the designs are unique to Urbanity Studios.  They offer customization of colors and even a color matching service – send them a piece of ribbon, fabric or other colored item to match and they will find a color match for your invitation!

For a design fee ($50) Urbanity will also develop a custom design for you and/or design
matching items for an invitation from their range.

There is a very small range of just 30 wedding invitation designs, with matching / related wedding invitation designs extending their designs. They also have 1 wedding invitation design in their bottle range (out of 8 in total).

All paper is eco-friendly, either coming from wind energy manufacture or part recycled paper.  The bottles are made from recycled plastic too.  All printing is ‘flat’ which keeps the costs comparably low.

Additional
Services
Top of the list must be the innovative ‘Message in a bottle’ range. Requiring no additional packaging to go in the US post (just buy your stamps from the Postal Office), this is a truly unique approach to delivery of your message.

You can order a proof of your invitation without having to place and order – just send them an email.

Samples Are available for $3.  This includes a sample pack for wedding invitations.  IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a ’suite’ of wedding invitations so that you can sample the paper and print quality, rather than the exact design you are interested in.
Ships To Within the USA and Internationally  – Via FedEx,UPS, US Postal Service
Process When you select a design you have a range of customizing options for that design
including color, font style and paper size (square, standard, tea-length, postcard) with and without envelopes.

You enter your personal wording, describe your font and color preferences, enter your quantity and proceed to cart.  You receive your proof within 1 business day and once approved, your order is printed (super speedy!) in 3-5 business days.

Urbanity have a satisfaction guarantee – if they make a mistake you can have a full refund, gift certificate or exchange.  If you make a mistake, you can have 20% of a re-print.

Price A small range of designs, but quite a few styles are covered, including of
course the signature ‘message in a bottle’.

The majority of invitations are priced at between $98 to $109 for 100 invites, with folded invites going up to $198 per 100.

3D printable invites are $289 per 100 and Message in a Bottle are $399 per 100, or $432 if you choose to include sand, roses or feathers with the scroll in the bottle.

Overall this still places them firmly in the inexpensive to affordable wedding invitation range.

What I Loved As you may have guessed, I love the  ’message in a bottle’.  It is such a interesting and innovative approach.

A few other nice features in ordering include…

- you can order the exact quantity you want eg – 27 or 84 or 171 invites.
- you can customize wording on matching / related items – eg response cards, which gives you total flexibility.
- you can order a proof without having to place an order
- you can choose – literally – any color to match any item that is central to your wedding

What I Didn’t There is no online preview functionality on the site – there is no rollover of the designs, you can’t see the different color combinations or personalized wording real time.

The search function is quite limited and its hard to find a specific design without filters.

When ordering matching items, you have to enter each order separately, rather than being able to select / add them to your order as you go through.

Hot Tip Urbanity keep an up to date Sale Page.  Always worth checking back, or joining their list (or mine) to stay up to date with their latest offerings.

Urbanity post their customer feedback under ‘Customer Reviews’ – great spot for seeing how others have customized their designs.
